Emerson College Poll: Americans Find Trump More Truthful Than The Media
According to a survey carried out by Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts, the American people think that President Donald Trump and his administration are more honest than the mainstream media by a 10-point margin.
The survey revealed that Mr. Trump and the people associated with his administration are thought of as truthful by 49 percent of citizens. He and his associates are regarded as untruthful by 48 percent of voters.
At the same time, the news media is judged as untruthful by a 53 percent of likely voters. In contrast, just 39 percent of those surveyed found the news media to be truthful. That is a 14-point gap.
This mistrust and suspicion regarding the media has been a typical theme in the public for a long time. Trust in the media recently dropped down to an all-time low late last year (2016). Per a Gallup poll, just 32 percent of Americans really relied on the media to report the news and current events in an accurate, fair, and objective manner.
A key finding of the poll shows that trust in either the Trump administration or the news media varies significantly along political party lines. 89 percent of registered Republicans think that Donald Trump’s administration is truthful, while 77 percent of registered Democrats classify the new administration as very untruthful.
In stark contrast, 69 percent of Democrats consider the media to be trustworthy and reliable. However, 91 percent of the Republicans state that the media is not honest. The survey indicates that voters who identify as politically independent are equally divided on their questions about the Trump administration and the media, with mistrust at 52 percent and 47 percent respectively.
So, while lack of trust in the media crosses party lines and political philosophies, it is clearly being fueled by registered Republican party members and those who identify as conservative.
This survey had a sample size of 617 registered voters. The margin of error for the poll is +/ -3.9 percent.
