[VIDEO] Bill Maher Compares ANTIFA Movement To Book Burning

By  |

Liberal political pundit and host of Real Time, Bill Maher, had what seemed to be a moment of clarity when he compared the anti-First Amendment crowd (ANTIFA), who have been shutting down opposing views on college campuses, with those in history who burned books.

Though there were many examples, throughout history, of governments, political parties, and armed forces that destroyed the collective knowledge of a civilization, the most notable that most people might immediately think of is the National Socialists (Nazis) of Germany.

Maher was speaking to a panel of guests when he brought up an incident in which Conservative political pundit Ann Coulter was invited to speak at the University of Berkeley in California.

However, prior to the event, ANTIFA activists began protesting Coulter’s appearance, and demanded that her invitation to speak on campus be revoked, which it was.

Maher, an outspoken Liberal, criticized the university protesters,

“Berkeley used to be the cradle of free speech, and now it’s just the cradle for f*****g babies…”

He went on to point out that this behavior was not an isolated incident, and compared it to previous moments in mankind’s history where information was deliberately destroyed in order to silence differing opinions.

“I feel like, you know, this goes on all over the country on campuses. They invite someone to speak who’s not exactly what liberals want to hear, and they want to shut her down. I feel like this is the Liberal’s version of book burning.”

Maher continued his thought by pointing to former presidential candidate Howard Dean, who argued that “hate speech” was not protected under the 1st Amendment.

“Yes it is. Threats are not protected by the 1st Amendment. This is why the Supreme Court said the Nazis could march in Skokie. They’re a hateful bunch, but that’s what the 1st Amendment means.”

While the entire point of his argument was to criticize certain actions being taken by the Left, Maher did not let the opportunity go without bashing Fox News.
