[VIDEO] Condi Rice Speaks Out In Support Of Trump
Condoleezza Rice, the Former Secretary of State under President George W. Bush – defended current President Donald Trump during an interview with CNBC.
Mrs. Rice suggested that people who trash Trump over everything he says or tweets should consider the fact that he’s only five months into his presidency: “While the language may be different, and we might talk about needing to deal with policy, I think you’re going to see that the view that Americans’ interests in values are always linked will come around. It’s early days in this administration. Let’s remember that,” Rice said.
Mrs. Rice’s comments came as a surprise to many because her most significant comments during the 2016 Presidential campaign included harsh criticism of then-candidate Trump in the wake of the leaked “Access Hollywood” tape showing the President allegedly bragging about sexually assaulting women.
On October 8th, 2016 Rice wrote on Facebook: “Enough! Donald Trump should not be President. He should withdraw. As a Republican, I hope to support someone who has the dignity and stature to run for the highest office in the greatest democracy on earth.”
However, in the wake of Mr. Trump’s surprise victory in November – Mrs. Rice suggested to Vice President Mike Pence that then-ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson would be a good choice to serve as the Secretary of State in the newly minted Trump Administration.
Secretary Rice’s recommendation eventually led to a thawing of relations between her and President Trump. They even managed to hold a public meeting at the White House in March to put the harsh words behind them.
In the past, the former Secretary acknowledged her concerns about a president that many establishment politicians accused of eroding democracy at home and ignoring it abroad. She called Donald Trump a novice in world affairs; said he has a “steeper learning curve than most” presidents – and pushed him to adopt what would be a stark reversal in his policies to favor promoting human rights and American strategies like the type that she advocated as President Bush’s top foreign policy adviser.
But now Rice is quoted as saying Mr. Trump stands for America’s values, like all presidents. “I believe every president of the United States stands for our values. […] You heard President Trump say, for instance, after the Syrian chemical attack, we can’t let that stand,” she said.
“I think we’re going to see a president who understands the value of alliances, the value of democratic alliances. Democracies are amazing,” Rice concluded.
